Gunman kills 19 elementary school kids in Texas - Angry and depressed President Biden told the country, "We need to act," after failing to pass new laws for years. A gunman killed at least 19 children Tuesday at an elementary school in Texas, officials said, in the latest massacre in a country plagued by them. Law enforcement killed the attacker. State Sen. Roland Gutierrez says state police briefed him on the deaths, which include three adults. The number of wounded wasn't clear right away, or whether the attacker was included. Superintendent Hal Harrell said, "I'm heartbroken," announcing all school activities have been cancelled until further notice. I'm counting on your prayers to get us through this." In Buffalo, New York, a deadly, racist rampage at a supermarket just a few days earlier added to a long string of mass murders at churches, schools, and stores. It looked as if there wouldn't be any reform of gun laws as soon as Sandy Hook ended. Joe Biden declared new gun restrictions hours after the attack in an address to the nation. Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the gunman crashed outside the school before going inside. Gutierrez said he had gotten two military-style rifles for his birthday before he went to the school. His 18th birthday was his first time doing something like that. Not sure what motivated him. The motive for the shooting hasn't been disclosed, but the governor identified the attacker as Salvador Ramos and said he lived in the community about 135 km west of San Antonio. Mr. Gutierrez said Ramos had made a hint on social media that an attack might be coming, noting "he'd said the kids should watch out." According to a law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter, a border patrol agent working nearby when the shooting began shot the gunman, who was behind a barricade. Law enforcement source: he was wounded but walked out of the school. Pete Arredondo, the school district's police chief, said the attacker was on his own. As of early Thursday, it wasn't clear how many people were injured, but Arredondo said several people had been hurt. Uvalde Memorial Hospital said 13 children were treated there. Another hospital said a 66-year-old woman was in critical condition. This is the last day of classes at Robb Elementary School before summer break. It serves second, third and fourth grade students. Robb Elementary is in a neighborhood with mostly modest homes in Uvalde, a town of about 16,000 people. School shootings in Texas have been among the deadliest in the past 5 years, and the tragedy in Uvalde was the deadliest in the state's history. Ten people were killed by a gunman at Santa Fe High School in Houston in 2018. A year earlier, a gunman in Sutherland Springs shot and killed 30 people in a church service. Another gunman at a Walmart in El Paso killed 23 people during a racist attack in 2019. Gun control in the U.S. In addition to Abbott and both Texas' U.S. senators, both were scheduled speakers at the National Rifle Association's lobbying office's Friday leadership forum. Gun control debates in Congress have waxed and waned in the years since Sandy Hook. There have been roadblocks from Republicans and influence from outside groups like the NRA whenever lawmakers tried to change U.S. gun policies. After Sandy Hook, Sens. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, and Patrick J. Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican, negotiated a bipartisan proposal to expand federal background checks. Earlier this year, the House passed two bills to expand background checks on firearm purchases. One would have closed a loophole for private and online sales.
